LEH, Sept 24: Violence rocked Leh town today, leaving four civilians dead and at least 89 people injured, including 30 police and CRPF personnel, after mobs torched the BJP office, the Leh Hill Council office and a CRPF vehicle. Authorities imposed curfew and called in ITBP companies to restore order.
The unrest erupted after the Leh Apex Body (LAB) youth wing called for protests demanding early dialogue with the Centre ahead of the scheduled October 6 talks with LAB and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA). Demonstrators, pressing for statehood and Sixth Schedule status, clashed with security forces as arson and vandalism spread across the town.
Police used teargas, baton charge and opened fire to contain the mobs, who also tried to attack security personnel. With several critically injured, the death toll is feared to rise. The final day of the Ladakh Festival was cancelled in the wake of the violence.
The Union Home Ministry blamed climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, accusing him of inciting the mob through provocative speeches. Wangchuk, who had been on hunger strike since September 10, appealed to youth to stop violence and announced he was ending his fast.
Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta condemned the violence, assured strict action against culprits, and urged people to maintain peace and unity. He said all genuine demands would be addressed through dialogue.
