Union Minister Jitendra Singh interacts with shopkeepers at Azadpur market

Union Minister Jitendra Singh meeting shopkeepers at Azadpur market, New Delhi

NEW DELHI, Sept 23: Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Tuesday visited the Azadpur market in Delhi to interact with traders and gather feedback on the recently introduced next-generation GST reforms.

Accompanied by Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva, Singh also pasted stickers on shops encouraging the promotion of locally-produced items under the ‘swadeshi’ campaign. He said the reforms have provided substantial relief to both shopkeepers and consumers.

Sachdeva added that the new GST rates have brought cheer to people ahead of Diwali, with prices of essential items such as medicines, stationery, footwear and toys witnessing a drop.

The GST reforms simplify the tax structure into two main slabs — 5% and 18%. Ultra-luxury items will attract a 40% tax, while tobacco and related products remain in the 28% plus cess category. Earlier, GST was levied in four slabs — 5%, 12%, 18% and 28% — along with compensation cess.

Singh emphasized that the move is part of the government’s broader effort to ease business operations and make taxation more transparent for traders across the country.
