The victim was identified as 30-year-old Mehjabeen Akil Sheikh of West Malad, Mumbai. Initial reports had described her death as a road accident, but investigations later confirmed that she had sustained a gunshot injury. Two other women, her sister Fatima Akil (21) and Jaspreet Kour (28) of Ludhiana, were also injured.

Suspended Officers

The suspended officials include SHO Channi Himmat Inspector Deepak Pathania, Incharge Police Post Sainik Colony PSI Waseem Bhatti, and PSI Rohit Sharma. Senior authorities cited delays and failures in promptly detecting the murder as reasons for their suspension.

Sequence of Events

On August 21, the injured trio was brought to JK Medicity Hospital by two men, Naveen Bakshi and Surinder Pal, who claimed the women were victims of a road accident. Against medical advice, the women were shifted to other hospitals, and Mehjabeen succumbed on August 30 at GMC Jammu.

Police initially initiated inquest proceedings under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS). However, further investigation, including post-mortem conducted on August 31, revealed a firearm injury, leading to registration of FIR No. 152/2025 under murder and Arms Act provisions on September 18.

Investigation and Forensics

Investigators have collected CCTV footage, mobile call records, and IPDRs of the deceased, injured, and their associates. Forensic experts, magistrates, and crime teams also visited the scene of crime, seizing evidence. Police said a professional approach is being taken to explore whether a larger nexus is involved.

Gunman Still at Large

While the probe has confirmed that Mehjabeen died of a bullet wound, the identity of the gunman remains unknown. Efforts are ongoing to trace and arrest the culprit. Police have assured that the investigation is continuing on its merits.
