Srinagar, Sept 19: Peoples Conference president and MLA from Handwara, Sajjad Gani Lone, today launched a sharp attack on the National Conference (NC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), accusing them of “selective morality” and “political theatrics.”

Lone accused PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti of hypocrisy over her letter to the Union Home Minister seeking clemency for JKLF chief Mohammad Yasin Malik, pointing out that the same leaders had endorsed cases against Malik when in power. “When in power they destroy lives, and when out of power they posture as defenders of rights,” he said.
Questions Over Mercy Plea
Lone said his concern was not personal loyalty to Malik, but about the “double standards” of traditional political families. “So on whose advice has this mercy letter been written today? Malik never appealed himself—he narrated his story with courage,” he said, questioning Mehbooba Mufti’s move.
He reminded that Malik still faces several pending cases, including one linked to Mehbooba’s own family testimony. “At that time they trapped him, and today they shed tears. How long will this hypocrisy continue?” Lone asked.
Tracing Roots of the Case
Lone alleged that the case in which the NIA now seeks the death penalty against Malik dates back to 2002 under Dr. Farooq Abdullah’s tenure. “With Vajpayee and Musharraf engaged in talks, mainstream leaders feared Hurriyat joining elections and fabricated cases to secure their own legacies,” Lone said.
He recalled that even Farooq Abdullah in 2019 claimed he and Malik were on the “same path” to woo voters, while the very case was registered during his tenure.
Sharp Attack on Mehbooba Mufti
Lone accused Mehbooba Mufti of political drama, citing the arrest of preacher Sarjan Barkati under her Government in 2016, when 64 FIRs were filed against him. “Today she cites his name for sympathy. This is a mockery of prisoners’ suffering,” he said.
“Both NC and PDP families must first seek forgiveness from the people of Kashmir before claiming to defend anyone on humanitarian grounds,” he said. “As long as your hands are stained with false cases and blood, you have no moral right to use anyone’s sacrifice for theatrics.”
“No More Double Role Politics”
Lone warned Kashmiris not to be deceived by what he called “all-rounder politics.” “You cannot be both bowler and batsman at the same time. You cannot be on both sides,” he said, pledging to continue reminding people of past actions of leaders now seeking moral high ground.
