CPI(M) leader M.Y. Tarigami accuses Centre of weakening J&K Assembly

CPI(M) leader M.Y. Tarigami addressing media, accusing Centre of weakening J&K Assembly.

SRINAGAR, Sept 24: CPI (M) leader M.Y. Tarigami today alleged that the Central Government is deliberately weakening the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly and restricting the scope of governance, making effective delivery on the ground “extremely difficult.”

“Despite people’s expectations, the mandate given to the Assembly has not been respected. The Assembly needs to be empowered, but the Centre remains adamant on disempowering it. Naturally, when the ambit of governance is circumscribed, people’s expectations of delivery cannot be met,” Tarigami told reporters here.

Rejecting the BJP’s allegation that the Government is focused only on transfers, Tarigami said, “They have nothing else to say. If they are really concerned about governance, then the Government should be allowed to deliver. Unfortunately, the Centre has tied the Assembly’s hands.”

Speaking on the recent floods that hit livelihoods, Tarigami said apple-laden trucks were stranded on highways for days, causing heavy losses for farmers and traders. “The Government must provide a relief package. The local Government should pursue the case with the Centre so that those who suffered losses receive compensation,” he added.

Tarigami also expressed concerns about the environmental crisis in the Himalayan region, pointing to devastation in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, and Punjab. He welcomed initiatives by environmental groups to work collectively and stressed the importance of raising awareness among the youth. “Holding discussions in colleges is important so that the new generation becomes more conscious about the future,” he said.
