JAMMU, Sept 23: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Jammu and Kashmir Police today formally arrested a suspended cop in connection with the killing of a Gujjar youth during police firing in Sure Chak on July 24 this year.
Officials said Constable Pawan Singh, one of the two suspended District Special Branch (DSB) personnel, was arrested on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder under section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). He was placed under suspension on July 25 along with Head Constable Baljinder Singh following outrage over the incident.
The deceased was identified as Mohammad Parvez alias Bachu, son of late Rehmat Ali of Javed Nagar, Nikki Tawi, Jammu. SIT investigations have also established that Parvez was involved in narcotics smuggling, police sources said.
An FIR (No. 153/2025) had been registered at Satwari Police Station under sections 109(1), 3(5) BNS and 3/27 Arms Act after the victim’s family alleged that Parvez was innocent and had been killed in cold blood. The next day, a departmental inquiry led by DySP Headquarters Jammu and a SIT headed by DySP Domana Mudassar Hussain were constituted to probe the allegations.
Additionally, the District Magistrate Jammu ordered a magisterial inquiry by the SDM Jammu South to ensure an impartial probe into the circumstances of the firing incident.
“As investigations progress, one suspended cop has now been arrested for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. It has also been confirmed that the deceased was a drug peddler,” a senior police officer said on condition of anonymity.
