NEW DELHI, Sept 23: Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (CISC) Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit today said that India’s proposed air defence project Sudarshan Chakra will be the “mother of all air defence systems” with multi-layered capabilities ranging from counter-drone and counter-UAV to counter-hypersonic systems.
Speaking at a conference on Counter UAVs & Air Defence Systems: Future of Modern Warfare, Dixit stressed that India must stay two steps ahead of adversaries in defence planning, citing lessons from Operation Sindoor, the Russia-Ukraine war and the Azerbaijan-Armenia conflict, where drones played a decisive role in modern warfare.
He noted that enemy drones have been increasingly sophisticated, employing AI and visual navigation systems, and India’s defence industry must embrace the motto of “Think in India” to ideate and innovate beyond Make in India. “We cannot rely on past success. Our counter-drone and GPS-jamming worked well recently, but next time adversaries will be better prepared,” he warned.
On Sudarshan Chakra, Dixit said, “It will integrate sensors, missiles, surveillance tools and artificial intelligence into a unified defence shield. With counter-drone measures forming the lowest layer, the system will also cover counter-hypersonic threats.”
He underlined the need for both soft-kill and hard-kill approaches in drone warfare, while also balancing the economic costs of war. “I cannot go bankrupt while winning a war,” he said, pointing out that drones are cheaper yet highly destructive against expensive military assets.
Earlier, Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan had described Sudarshan Chakra as India’s answer to advanced global systems like Israel’s Iron Dome, calling it both a “shield and a sword.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the 10-year mission during his Independence Day address this year.
