NEW DELHI, Sept 24: Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday stepped up his attack on the Election Commission of India (ECI), demanding that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar hand over evidence to the Karnataka CID regarding alleged vote deletion in the Aland constituency.
In a post on social media platform X, Gandhi alleged that the EC acted only after his intervention. “Gyanesh ji, we caught the theft and only then did you remember to put a lock – now we’ll catch the thieves too. So tell us, when are you going to give the evidence to CID?” he asked.
He was referring to reports that the EC has introduced a new ‘e-sign’ Aadhaar-based verification system for addition and deletion of votes. Gandhi suggested that the move came only after the Aland controversy surfaced.
Earlier, Gandhi claimed that votes in Aland were being deleted through a software, but the Karnataka CID detected and blocked the alleged fraud, registering an FIR in the matter. He had urged the Election Commission to provide all relevant details to the investigating agency.
However, EC officials clarified that the new verification system was not introduced as a reaction to the Aland case, but as part of ongoing reforms to improve the integrity of voter rolls.
