SRINAGAR, Sept 24: PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday pressed for a detailed debate in the forthcoming Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on issues ranging from the alleged misuse of the Public Safety Act (PSA) to declining tourism and mounting losses in the horticulture sector.
Mehbooba questioned why the key highway, blocked since early September, had not yet been restored, holding the government responsible for heavy losses to fruit growers. “Who will compensate the farmers? Will there be a package or waiver of kisan loans? These must be discussed in the Assembly,” she said.
The PDP chief also flagged the downturn in Kashmir’s tourism following the April 22 Pahalgam attack, warning of growing despair among people dependent on the sector.
On PSA, Mehbooba said that while repealing the law may not be within the current government’s powers, the Assembly should at least hold a threadbare discussion. Referring to MLA Mehraj Malik’s detention, she argued that if elected representatives could face PSA charges for unparliamentary remarks, ordinary citizens were even more vulnerable. She urged the government to provide legal aid to poor detainees unable to challenge their detention in courts.
She also raised the case of jailed separatist leader Yasin Malik, stating that since he had renounced violence in 1994 on assurances by government officials, those commitments should not now be disregarded. “This is not only about Yasin Malik but about respecting the word given by the state,” she said, urging NSA Ajit Doval and former RAW chief A S Dulat to clarify Malik’s claims in his affidavit before the Delhi High Court.
“You talked a militant into embracing Gandhian methods. Using his past against him now is wrong — for J&K, for India and for our international standing,” Mehbooba asserted.
