Omar Abdullah on J&K statehood restoration

J&K CM Omar Abdullah addressing media on statehood restoration and related issues

SRINAGAR, Sept 24: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday voiced concern that the Union Territory’s statehood might be withheld simply because the BJP failed to win last year’s Assembly elections.

“Sometimes it looks like people of Jammu and Kashmir will not get statehood because the BJP lost the elections. This is injustice because nowhere was it said that statehood would be restored only if the BJP wins,” Abdullah told reporters outside his private office in Srinagar.

He noted that BJP was the only party opposing restoration of statehood and reminded that the process had been outlined earlier as a three-step plan—delimitation, elections, and then statehood. “Delimitation happened, elections were conducted, and people participated enthusiastically. It was unfortunate for the BJP that they lost, but punishing people for that is wrong,” he said.

On the issue of tourism in Kashmir, Abdullah admitted stakeholders were disappointed with visitor numbers but assured continued efforts for revival. “We expected larger tourist inflow, but that has not materialised yet. Still, we remain committed to promoting the sector,” he added.

Addressing the controversy around the ‘I Love Muhammad’ campaign, Abdullah dismissed the uproar as baseless. “Only a mentally sick person can object to these words. How can it be illegal to write ‘I Love Muhammad’? People of other religions also openly revere their deities and leaders, which has never been considered unlawful,” he asserted, urging the courts to resolve the matter quickly.
