Protesters clash with police during Ladakh statehood and Sixth Schedule agitation in Leh
LEH, Sept 24: Tension gripped Leh on Tuesday as police resorted to baton charge and fired teargas shells to disperse protesters demanding statehood for Ladakh and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule. The agitation turned violent after a section of youths allegedly pelted stones and set ablaze a security vehicle outside the BJP office.
The shutdown was called by the Leh Apex Body (LAB) youth wing and supported by the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) to press the Centre for advancing the next round of talks scheduled on October 6. Protesters accused the government of delaying the dialogue process despite growing public resentment in the region.
The situation escalated after two out of 15 activists on an ongoing 35-day hunger strike, which began on September 10, were hospitalised due to deteriorating health conditions. The hunger strike, led by renowned climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, has been at the forefront of the statehood and Sixth Schedule agitation.
Police confirmed that additional forces were deployed to restore order in the town. Despite the violence, leaders of LAB and KDA reiterated their commitment to continue peaceful protests until their core demands are met.
The protesters said that constitutional safeguards, representation, and autonomy were essential for safeguarding Ladakh’s identity, land, jobs, and environment. They warned of intensifying the agitation if the Centre fails to hold meaningful dialogue soon.
