Authorities allowed the movement of fruit-laden trucks towards Jammu, Delhi, and other destinations across India, following massive hue and cry from growers and traders whose produce had been stuck due to the prolonged closure caused by landslides and heavy rains.
Highway Reopened with Restrictions
The 270-kilometre-long highway had reopened last week but only for light motor vehicles. Today’s decision permits heavy vehicles to move as well, easing the supply chain disruption that had put the Valley’s horticulture sector under severe strain.
SSP National Highway Adil Ganai said: “Our aim is to clear the maximum number of stranded vehicles, especially those carrying fruits. Priority will be given to such vehicles along the highway and at the fruit mandis.”
He advised truckers to follow traffic advisories and avoid overtaking, noting that rain in the evening made a 250-metre road stretch near Thard in Udhampur slippery. Trucks were moving slowly but traffic remained clear, he added.
Officials confirmed that 6-wheel fruit-laden trucks had already been operating for several days via the Mughal Road to ensure partial supply.
Restrictions on Bani-Basohli Road
Meanwhile, the Divisional Magistrate Bani has imposed restrictions on vehicular movement along the Bani-Basohli Road from 6 pm to 6 am daily. The order has been enforced keeping in view extensive damage caused by heavy rains and to facilitate renovation work by GREF.
“Vehicular movement shall remain prohibited during these hours unless permitted in exigency. Police and GREF officials will ensure strict enforcement of this order,” the directive stated.
