Railway employees to receive 78-day bonus approved by Union Cabinet

Union Cabinet approves 78-day Productivity Linked Bonus for over 10.91 lakh railway employees

NEW DELHI, Sept 24: The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday approved the payment of Productivity Linked Bonus (PLB) equivalent to 78 days’ wages for railway employees, costing the exchequer ₹1,865.68 crore.

The bonus will benefit nearly 10.91 lakh non-gazetted railway employees, including Track Maintainers, Loco Pilots, Guards, Station Masters, Supervisors, Technicians, Helpers, Pointsmen, and other Group ‘C’ staff. The maximum payable amount for each eligible employee is ₹17,951.

The payment, made annually ahead of Durga Puja and Dussehra, is intended to boost morale and encourage railway staff to improve performance further. In FY 2024-25, Indian Railways recorded exceptional results, transporting 1,614.90 million tonnes of cargo and carrying nearly 7.3 billion passengers.

Alongside the PLB announcement, the Cabinet approved major infrastructure projects, including:

  • Doubling of the Bakhtiyarpur–Rajgir–Tilaiya section (104 km) in Bihar at a cost of ₹2,192 crore, enhancing connectivity to Nalanda, Rajgir (Shanti Stupa), and Pawapuri, and benefiting over 13.46 lakh people across four districts, including aspirational districts Gaya and Nawada.
  • Construction of the 4-lane Sahebganj–Areraj–Bettiah section of NH-139W in Bihar on Hybrid Annuity Mode, covering 78.94 km at a cost of ₹3,822.31 crore.
  • A massive ₹69,725 crore package to revitalise India’s shipbuilding and maritime sector, focusing on shipbuilding, maritime financing, and strengthening domestic capacity.

The decisions are expected to not only motivate railway staff but also significantly boost infrastructure and economic growth in Bihar and across India.
