Dr. Jitendra Singh releasing NITI Aayog’s report on India’s innovation journey
NEW DELHI, Sept 23: Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh today underlined that India’s innovation journey towards Viksit Bharat@2047 requires global thinking, breaking mental barriers, and strong synergy between government and private sector.
Speaking at the launch of NITI Aayog’s landmark report “Pathways to Progress: Analysis and Insights into India’s Innovation Story”, jointly released with Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Dr. Singh called for adopting global benchmarks and fostering industry–academia partnerships to ensure startups transform into sustainable ventures.
Highlighting India’s rise in the Global Innovation Index from 81st position in 2015 to 39th in 2025, he credited deliberate policy choices, investments in entrepreneurship, and the energy of young innovators. Today, India hosts over 1 lakh recognised startups and more than 100 unicorns, with nearly half emerging from Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.
He pointed out challenges like lack of institutional synergy, weak academia–industry linkages, uneven state-level innovation capacities, and gaps in IP protection. To address these, he proposed specialised innovation platforms on the lines of BIRAC and IN-SPACe in other technology sectors.
Dr. Singh stressed that government initiatives like the National Deep Tech Startup Policy and the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) represent a fundamental shift towards building sovereignty in frontier technologies, rewarding creativity and risk-taking.
“The innovation journey cannot rely on government alone. It requires a whole-of-nation approach—government enabling, industry scaling, academia creating knowledge, and youth driving energy and creativity. Together, we can realise the dream of Viksit Bharat by 2047,” he asserted.
