ORECHOVA (SLOVAKIA), Sept 23: India’s young racing sensation Atiqa Mir produced a stirring performance in the Champions of the Future Academy (COFTA) karting series, finishing an impressive fourth in round 4.1 at the Slovakia Karting Centre after running in contention for most of the race.
The 10-year-old showcased mature racecraft to put herself in a winning position before narrowly missing a podium finish by just 0.32 seconds — a result that marks the best-ever top-four finish by an Indian in the championship’s history and the highest finish by a female competitor this season.
Atiqa, who earlier won in the DAMC series in Dubai this month, is the first Indian supported by Formula 1 and is part of the F1 Academy DYD programme. In the weekend’s second race she was running comfortably in third until a collision on lap seven — being hit from the rear — forced her off track and she eventually finished 11th
Reflecting on the weekend, the AKCEL GP driver said: “I was so close to the win and the podium but happy at the same time with my progress and performance against this top European grid. It’s nice to see all the hard work and training paying off.”
Her father, former Formula Asia vice-champion Asif Nazir Mir, who travels with her to races worldwide, praised her grit and rapid improvement: “It was an incredible drive by Atiqa against this quality of drivers. Her hard work is beginning to pay off now.”
Atiqa previously made history in the championship by becoming the first Indian to reach the podium in the Mini Under-10 category at Round 6 in Abu Dhabi last year, and this weekend’s performance has underlined her rising credentials on the international karting stage.
