
JAMMU, Sept 23: Enthusiastic Dogras, political leaders, social groups and academic institutions across Jammu and Kashmir today marked the 130th birth anniversary of Maharaja Hari Singh, the last Dogra ruler of the erstwhile princely state. The occasion also coincided with the 100 years of his coronation.
Major events were organized by Yuva Rajput Sabha (YRS) and Shri Amar Kshatriya Rajput Sabha, featuring rallies, cultural programmes, floral tributes and distribution of sweets. A mega bike and car rally, led by YRS president Sanjeev Singh Rinku, culminated at the Maharaja’s statue near Tawi Bridge, where tributes were paid in the presence of DC Jammu Rakesh Minhas, former minister Ajatshatru Singh, MLA Shagun Parihar and members of the Dogra royal family.
Grand functions were also organized in Samba, Ramban, Reasi, Jandrah and Sunderbani where prominent leaders including MLA Arjun Singh, Gen Goverdhan Singh Jamwal (Retd), Jugal Kishore Sharma, Surjeet Singh Slathia and others remembered the Maharaja as a farsighted reformist and a just ruler.
In Jammu, BJP leaders including state president Sat Sharma, MPs Jugal Kishore Sharma and Er. Gulam Ali Khatana paid floral tributes at the party headquarters. Congress leaders, led by Raman Bhalla, also paid homage at Tawi Bridge, recalling the Maharaja’s progressive reforms.
Tributes also poured in from Dogra Sadar Sabha, Bar Association Jammu, Mission Statehood, DSRS & Department of History, University of Jammu and several Rajput Sabhas across districts. Speakers recalled the Maharaja’s role in introducing judicial reforms, education initiatives and social justice measures.
Commemorative events were also held at the grassroots: Humanity Public School organized a special assembly; Captain Tushar Mahajan Memorial Trust distributed relief to flood-hit families; SRCO celebrated with children at Kishtwar orphanage; while the National Incredible Literacy Mission (NILM) highlighted the Maharaja’s enduring legacy through discussions and cultural programmes.
Speakers across functions described Maharaja Hari Singh as a visionary monarch who championed education, social reforms and unity, and left behind a legacy deeply admired by generations of J&K residents.
