General Anil Chauhan CDS tenure extended till May 2026

General Anil Chauhan’s tenure as Chief of Defence Staff has been extended till May 30, 2026.

NEW DELHI, Sept 24: The Government on Tuesday approved the extension of service of General Anil Chauhan as Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and Secretary, Department of Military Affairs, up to May 30, 2026, or until further orders.

According to an official statement, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) cleared the extension, reaffirming General Chauhan’s role as the highest-ranking military officer who coordinates tri-services operations and strategy.

General Chauhan was appointed as CDS on September 28, 2022, becoming the second officer to hold the post after the late General Bipin Rawat. He has since been instrumental in enhancing jointness among the Army, Navy, and Air Force while driving structural reforms in defence administration.

Commissioned into the Indian Army in 1981, General Chauhan has held several key command and staff appointments during his distinguished career. He has been honoured with the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal, and Vishisht Seva Medal for his exemplary service.

The extension is seen as a move to ensure continuity in defence reforms, long-term strategic planning, and modernization of India’s armed forces.
