PATNA, Sept 24: The Congress on Wednesday slammed the Centre, saying a government built on “stolen mandates” and “rigged voter lists” lacks moral and political legitimacy. The party claimed the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls was a “dirty trick” by the BJP to manipulate rolls and cling to power.

The assertions formed part of two resolutions — a political resolution and an appeal to Bihar voters — passed at an extended Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting chaired by party president Mallikarjun Kharge. Senior leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Jairam Ramesh, KC Venugopal, Sachin Pilot and others attended.

Addressing a press conference, Jairam Ramesh warned of more disclosures on “vote chori” in the coming month, likening the revelations to successive powerful “bombs” that will expose alleged electoral fraud in multiple places. He said recent revelations from Mahadevapura and Aland in Karnataka were only the start.

The party launched a campaign to collect 5 crore signatures against alleged “vote chori”, running from September 15 to October 15, with the signatures to be submitted to the Election Commission. Ramesh accused the Election Commission of failing to answer questions and being complicit with the ruling party.

The CWC’s political resolution condemned alleged irregularities in electoral rolls as an attack on the foundations of democracy and hailed Rahul Gandhi for exposing the issue. “A government built on stolen mandates and rigged voter lists has no moral or political legitimacy,” the resolution said, adding that such conduct frees the government from accountability on issues like unemployment, inflation, healthcare and education.

In its appeal to Bihar voters, the Congress urged citizens to recognise the power of their vote and pledged to continue the struggle both inside Parliament and on the streets for protection of constitutional rights, social justice, reservations and fair delivery of welfare benefits.

Speaking at the CWC, Kharge also targeted the Centre’s foreign policy, claiming diplomatic failures are damaging India’s international standing and referencing recent US actions such as tariffs that have created headwinds for the country.
