Sainik Colony murder crime scene under probe by Crime Branch

Crime Branch investigating the high-profile Sainik Colony murder case

JAMMU, Sept 24: Fresh revelations in the Sainik Colony murder case suggest deliberate attempts were made to tamper with records and wash off the crime scene in order to project the gruesome killing as a road accident, before senior police officers intervened and handed the case to the Crime Branch.

Sources said the attempts were carried out by individuals who are either in Crime Branch custody or are under its scanner. Investigators are yet to establish whether the suspended police officers — Inspector Deepak Pathania (then SHO Channi Himmat), PSI Wasim Bhatti (then Incharge Police Post Sainik Colony), and PSI Rohit Sharma (then IO of the case) — were aware of or involved in the tampering.

Evidence collected from the physiotherapy centre, where the incident took place, includes photographs, bullet shells, bloodstains, bullet marks on walls and doors, and clothing. Additional evidence was lifted from JK Medicity Hospital, where the injured women were initially admitted as road accident victims, and from ASCOMS Batra and GMC Jammu, where Mehjabeen Akil Sheikh later succumbed.

Crime Branch questioning of two centre operators and one surviving victim — the sister of the deceased from Mumbai’s West Malad area — revealed the involvement of a “fourth woman”. Investigators suspect she helped tamper records and clean the crime scene. Her arrest is expected to uncover her exact role and assist in nabbing the absconding accused.

According to investigators, the accused fired at least eight rounds after storming into the centre in frustration while searching for this fourth woman. Once apprehended, the accused’s arrest is expected to also reveal the potential complicity of suspended police officers, sources added.
