Srinagar-Jammu National Highway NH-44 condition

Srinagar, Sept 15: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday said Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari assured him that “concrete steps will be taken within the next 24 hours” to address the situation on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway (NH-44), which has remained unstable, disrupting connectivity and trade.

Frustration of Fruit Growers

In a post on X, Omar said he spoke to Gadkari regarding the highway’s condition and the hardships faced by fruit growers. “They have been patient for days, but as their produce begins to rot due to NHIDCL’s inability to stabilize the road, their frustration is understandable,” he wrote. He added that he would wait to see the promised steps before commenting on the government’s plan of action.

Call for Highway Handover to J&K Govt

Earlier in the day, Omar told reporters that the suspension of heavy vehicular traffic had hit growers and dealers hard during the peak harvest season. He demanded that the highway be handed over to the J&K Government for faster repairs. “If it was my highway, I would have opened it. This highway belongs to the Government of India. If they cannot manage it, they should hand it over to us,” he said.

Omar stressed that the road must be restored quickly to allow trucks carrying fruit to pass. He also urged the Railway Ministry to run freight trains regularly instead of ceremonial one-time runs, noting that traders need continuous services until the highway stabilizes.

On Doda MLA’s Detention

Commenting on the detention of Doda MLA Mehraj Malik under the Public Safety Act (PSA), Omar said the Government should withdraw the order since Malik had already received relief from court. “If he had done something serious enough, he would not have gotten relief. The Government should accept its mistake and release him, while police continue their investigation,” he said.

Remarks on Waqf Bill

On the Waqf Bill, Omar accused the Government of targeting a particular community. “Only offices and properties of one religion have been brought under this law. It is good that the Supreme Court has taken note of this. The provision that prevents the Government from reclaiming land until investigation is complete is welcome. If other objectionable parts are also addressed, it will be better,” he said.

  • NH-44 Assurance: Gadkari promised action within 24 hours.
  • Fruit Growers: Facing heavy losses due to highway disruptions.
  • Omar’s Demand: Highway to be handed over to J&K Govt for quick repairs.
  • Other Issues: Omar sought release of Doda MLA under PSA and criticised provisions of Waqf Bill.
