Relief for Fruit Growers
The initiative, aimed at easing transportation hurdles caused by frequent closures of the Srinagar–Jammu National Highway, is expected to benefit thousands of fruit growers. “The start of a daily timetable train carrying horticulture produce to the National Capital is a major relief for fruit growers. I thank Indian Railways for this timely initiative,” Sinha said.
He noted that Kashmir’s economy, heavily dependent on horticulture, has faced significant losses in recent years due to landslides and adverse weather conditions disrupting road connectivity. “This train service is a leap towards minimizing those losses and ensuring perishable goods like apples and walnuts reach markets in time,” he added.
Boost to Agricultural Economy
Expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sinha said the service will significantly reduce transit time, increase income opportunities for farmers, and boost the Valley’s agricultural economy. He also congratulated the Indian Railways for launching the dedicated freight service between Budgam and New Delhi.
“This new freight train service will provide a faster and more economical transportation mode, strengthen market linkages, and bring tangible improvements in the lives and livelihoods of farmers,” Sinha said.
Details of Parcel Service
The daily parcel service is a Joint Parcel Product–Rapid Cargo initiative of Indian Railways, running between Budgam and Adarsh Nagar, New Delhi, with an important halt at Bari Brahmana in Jammu. The inaugural train had eight parcel coaches, each with a capacity of 23 tons, carrying fruit consignments worth ₹2.5 crore that reached Delhi in under 24 hours.
Railway officials said the train will primarily transport apples and walnuts in the initial phase, with a 15-coach service from Anantnag expected soon to further strengthen Kashmir’s cold chain and supply network.
“This is not just a proud moment for Kashmir but for the entire Union Territory and the Indian Railways,” officials remarked, highlighting the potential of the service to transform how Kashmiri produce reaches national markets.
