Sakeena Itoo accuses governments of weakening Kashmir’s horticulture sector

Minister Sakeena Itoo said horticulture, the backbone of Kashmir’s economy, has been deliberately weakened since 2014.

SRINAGAR, Sept 24: Minister for Health and Medical Education, Social Welfare and Education, Sakeena Itoo, today alleged that deliberate attempts have been made over the past several years to weaken Kashmir’s horticulture industry.

Speaking at Arwani village in Kulgam district after inaugurating a newly constructed New Type Primary Health Centre (NTPHC), Itoo accused successive governments since 2014 of neglecting the sector. “If anyone has broken the backbone of our economy, it is them. Apples from outside are being prioritised, while Kashmir’s own sector is being weakened,” she said.

Calling horticulture the mainstay of Kashmir’s economy, she added, “If the people of Kashmir have anything today, it is because of horticulture. Those making tall claims are themselves responsible for the hardships we face.”

She also criticised the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway’s condition, saying it collapses even with a short spell of rain. “This shows what has happened in the last nine years, especially after 2014,” she said, demanding an inquiry into why roads and protection bunds fail so easily.

Referring to the 2014 floods, Itoo said former CM Omar Abdullah worked extensively after the disaster, but no significant progress was made since then. She also inaugurated the NTPHC completed at a cost of Rs 2.71 crore and directed officials to address staff shortages for better patient care.

“Establishing such health facilities is part of the Government’s vision to ensure quality, accessible and affordable healthcare at the grassroots,” she said.
