Centre approves Rs 1,925.28 cr Nubra Zanskar Transmission Line project for Ladakh

Ladakh to get 24x7 reliable power after approval of Nubra and Zanskar transmission line projects

JAMMU, Sept 23: In a significant boost to Ladakh’s power sector, the Government of India has approved a Revised Cost Estimate-II (RCE-II) of Rs 1,925.28 crore for intra-state transmission projects under the Prime Minister’s Development Package (PMDP-2015).

The approval covers the balance works of two long-pending projects – the 220 kV Phyang-Diskit (Nubra) transmission line and the 220 kV Drass-Padum (Zanskar) line. With the latest sanction, stalled works will now resume on a war footing, with completion targeted by October 2026.

These projects, being implemented by RECPDCL with POWERGRID as project management and consultancy partner, were originally awarded in July 2021 at an estimated cost of Rs 1,203.08 crore. The revised sanction will now ensure timely execution of works and uninterrupted electricity supply in remote regions of Ladakh.

Once completed, the transmission network will replace around 28 diesel generator stations of 7 MVA and 5 MVA capacity currently in use, thereby reducing costs and cutting carbon emissions. The infrastructure will also enable integration of renewable energy projects, including solar parks and the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.

Apart from reliable 24×7 power for residents, the projects are expected to boost tourism, defence support, and socio-economic development in the strategically important high-altitude valleys of Nubra and Zanskar.

The sanction was cleared by the Monitoring Committee of the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) during its 52nd meeting chaired by the Union Power Secretary.
