NEW DELHI, Sept 24: In a major boost to India’s healthcare sector, the Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the Phase-III expansion of medical education capacity, paving the way for an additional 5,000 postgraduate (PG) seats in government medical colleges across the country.
Alongside, the government has also cleared the extension of the central scheme to upgrade existing government medical colleges for increasing 5,023 MBBS seats, with the cost ceiling enhanced to ₹1.50 crore per seat, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced.
According to an official statement, the initiative will significantly expand both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education capacity, address the shortage of specialist doctors, and allow the introduction of new super-specialities in medical institutions across India.
Officials said the decision is aimed at strengthening the country’s healthcare infrastructure and ensuring more equitable access to quality medical education, particularly in underserved regions.
