Nomadic Gujjar families face perilous journeys after bridges were washed away in Doda
Bhaderwah/Jammu, Sept 16: In the aftermath of recent flash floods that destroyed several bridges in high-altitude Jaie Valley, tribal Gujjar families in Doda district are risking their lives daily to sustain their livelihood. The floods, triggered by heavy rainfall on August 26, swept away four vital bridges, cutting off the 7,850-meter-high meadow from the market.

Tribal Families Face Extreme Hardships
Over 350 Gujjar families, who spend summers in Jaie Valley along with their cattle, depend on selling milk and dairy products in nearby markets. With all bridges washed away, they are forced to wade through fast-flowing streams twice a day, carrying their produce to sustain their families.
“There is no bridge left in the 20-km stretch after the floods. We have no choice but to cross the river on foot,” said Abdul Kareen Deedar, a nomad. “We cross in groups by holding hands. It’s dangerous, but we must do it for our families.”
Community Appeals for Relief
Mohd Hussain Chechi, head of the community, urged the administration to ensure the early reconstruction of the washed-away bridges, stressing that the situation has become unbearable for the nomads who rely entirely on daily market access.
Authorities Respond
Bhaderwah Divisional Forest Officer Devinder Kumar acknowledged the hardships of the families. “We have submitted a detailed report to both the forest department and the district administration for reconstruction. As soon as we get approval, the footbridges will be built on a war footing,” he assured.
