Ashwini Vaishnaw at National Film Awards

NEW DELHI, Sept 23: Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Tuesday pitched for local manufacturing of film equipment, including big cameras, under the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, while also stressing the need for harmonised cinema regulations across states.

Speaking at the National Film Awards function, Vaishnaw said the Centre is working on Model State Cinema Regulation Rules to simplify and standardise permissions required for film production. “The equipment used in the film industry must be made in India. We have to strengthen our own ecosystem,” he said.

He further underlined the importance of developing a live concert economy with proper policy support, uniform guidelines and easy permissions, adding that such initiatives could create a new wave of opportunities for India’s creative economy.

Vaishnaw also highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of India as a global content creation hub. He noted that the country’s first International Institute of Cinema and Technology (IICT) has started operations at NFDC’s Mumbai campus, offering 17 courses in collaboration with global tech leaders like Meta, NVIDIA, Microsoft and Google.

He added that Indian content creators are finding new international markets through the Waves Bazaar platform, recently hosted in Australia, South Korea and Canada, further expanding India’s cultural footprint worldwide.
