
Jammu, Sept 16: The latest UDISE+ (Unified District Information System for Education Plus) data for 2024-25 shows a mixed picture for Jammu and Kashmir’s education sector. While student enrollment has gone up, the total number of schools and teachers has slightly decreased compared to 2023-24.
Key Enrollment and Staffing Data
According to the Education Ministry’s report:
- Schools: 24,192 (down from 24,296 in 2023-24)
- Students: 26,54,012 (up from 26,29,949)
- Teachers: 1,66,717 (down from 1,67,046)
- Pupil-teacher ratio: 16 (unchanged)
- Average enrollment per school: 110 (up from 108)
Zero-Enrollment & Single-Teacher Schools
Zero-enrollment schools rose from 119 to 146, with teachers posted there dropping from 238 to 61. Single-teacher schools increased from 1,330 to 1,371, with enrollment rising from 31,054 to 32,303.
Student Profile
- General Category: 68.9% (down from 70.2%)
- SC: 8.2% (unchanged)
- ST: 15.4% (up from 14.0%)
- OBC: 7.4% (down from 7.6%)
- Muslim students: 68.9% (marginally down from 69.0%)
Infrastructure and Facilities
The report notes steady improvements in infrastructure and facilities:
- Libraries/reading corners: 18,171 (up from 18,000)
- Digital libraries: 381 (up from 373)
- Playgrounds: 18,031 (slightly down from 18,054)
- Kitchen gardens: 5,010 (up from 4,664)
- Computer facilities: 10,417 (up from 10,055), with 8,841 functional
- Internet availability: 11,883 schools (up from 11,016)
Sanitation and Utilities
Girls’ toilets increased to 22,070 (20,293 functional), while boys’ toilets slightly decreased to 21,495 (19,424 functional). Drinking water coverage dipped slightly to 24,111 schools, but functionality rose significantly to 24,061. Hand-wash facilities and rainwater harvesting systems also recorded marginal increases.
Accessibility Improvements
Accessibility features for children with special needs improved with ramps rising to 10,994 (from 10,254), ramps with handrails up to 3,580, and CWSN facilities rising to 1,943.
Aadhaar Integration
Aadhaar-seeding among students also strengthened, with 24,11,847 students linked in 2024-25 compared to 22,40,346 last year.
The data indicates that while J&K’s school system faces challenges such as zero-enrollment and single-teacher schools, improvements in digital access, infrastructure, and inclusivity mark positive trends.
