Admission by JeM Commander

Masood Ilyas Kashmiri, a senior JeM commander, made the confession while addressing the Mission Mustafa Conference in Pakistan’s Punjab province. A video of the speech, now widely circulated, shows Kashmiri flanked by gun-wielding terrorists and other commanders.

“After giving everything, Indian Armed Forces struck at Bhawalpur on May 7, tearing apart the family of Maulana Masood Azhar,” Kashmiri is heard saying in Urdu.

Details of Indian Strikes

On May 7, the Indian Armed Forces targeted JeM’s headquarters Markaz Subanallah at Bhawalpur, destroying the facility and killing several top terrorists. Among those killed were 10 of Azhar’s family members, including his elder sister, her husband, a nephew and his wife, a niece, five children, and four close associates who were top JeM commanders. Funerals were attended by Pakistan Army officials, further confirming the casualties.

Pakistan Army’s Support

Kashmiri also acknowledged open support from the Pakistan Army, noting that senior generals attended funerals of those killed in the strikes. Video clips aired during and after Operation Sindoor showed Pakistani military and civilian officials present at funerals of designated terrorists in Bhawalpur and Muridke (Lashkar-e-Taiba headquarters).

Background of Operation Sindoor

The Indian strikes, conducted from May 6–10, targeted terror camps and military establishments deep inside Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). The action came in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 civilians, including 25 tourists, were killed. Hundreds of terrorists from JeM, LeT, and other outfits, including top commanders, were neutralized in the operations.

JeM’s Terror History

Founded by Masood Azhar after his release during the IC-814 hijacking in 1999, JeM has been involved in several high-profile terror attacks in India, including the 2000 J&K Assembly attack, the 2001 Parliament attack, the 2016 Pathankot airbase attack, and the 2019 Pulwama suicide bombing.

In May 2019, Azhar was designated a “global terrorist” by the United Nations after years of Indian efforts. The elusive leader has not been seen publicly since then and is believed to be hiding in Bhawalpur under Pakistan’s protection.
