Udhampur Tawi Bridge Collapse Forces Villagers to Risk River Crossing; Army Roped In for Rebuild

UDHAMPUR, Sept 25: The collapse of a vital bridge over the River Tawi at Bant village during the August 26 flash floods continues to cripple daily life for thousands of residents, with students now forced to dangerously wade across the river to reach schools.

Collapsed bridge over River Tawi at Bant village, Udhampur

Vital River Tawi bridge at Bant village collapsed on August 26, disrupting access to schools, markets and essential services.

The bridge—built just nine years ago—served as a crucial lifeline, linking more than 20 villages and 10 Panchayats (over 50,000 residents) to Udhampur district headquarters. Its collapse has halted access to essential services, markets and educational institutions, pushing families to take risky river crossings, including carrying children on shoulders through fast-moving waters.

Officials said coordination with the Indian Army is underway to enable urgent reconstruction and restore safe passage at the earliest. Residents welcomed the move but urged authorities to ensure a durable, flood-resilient design and interim safe crossing until the bridge is rebuilt, to prevent further disruptions and accidents.

Local representatives also called for immediate temporary arrangements—such as Bailey bridges or controlled boat services—alongside a long-term mitigation plan that includes proper river training, protection bunds, and regular structural audits.
