NEW DELHI, Sept 26: Veteran journalist M L Kotru, former Resident Editor of The Statesman and a respected voice on Kashmir affairs, passed away in Gurugram late Thursday night. He was in his 90s.

Veteran journalist M L Kotru, a stalwart of Indian media and former Resident Editor of The Statesman, passed away in Gurugram.
Kotru’s illustrious career spanned nearly six decades, during which he mentored an entire generation of journalists. He also served as the India correspondent for The Sunday Times, London, and contributed to numerous publications in Jammu and Kashmir, his home state.
He authored the well-regarded book ‘The Kashmir Story’ in 1994 and edited ‘Asia ’72: Official Guide’. Kotru was also actively associated with the Press Club of India and the Press Association, where he remained a key figure in media circles.
“PCI is deeply saddened at the demise of veteran journalist and former Editor of The Statesman, M L Kotru. During his nearly six-decade-long stint in media, Mr Kotru mentored generations of journalists,” the Press Club of India said in a post on X. “His passing away is an irreparable loss to journalism. We pay our heartfelt tributes to him,” it added.
Colleagues and admirers across the journalistic fraternity hailed Kotru’s contributions, describing him as a fearless voice, sharp analyst, and an inspiration for young reporters navigating the world of media.
