Two Killed in House Collapse, One Washed Away; 47 Rescued by BSF from Flooding Chenab

Jammu, September 3, 2025 — Heavy rains wreaked havoc across Jammu—two people lost their lives after a house collapsed in Rajouri, a driver was washed away along with his vehicle in Ban Talab (Jammu North), and at least 47 villagers trapped in flooded Chenab near Garkhal (Pargwal) were airlifted to safety by BSF helicopters. The storms also disrupted roads, power, and water services across the region, compounding distress. (Source: Daily Excelsior)

Details of the Tragedy

  • Rajouri: A mother (Sita Devi, 52) and daughter (Sonia, 20) died when a wall of their ‘kacha’ house collapsed in Sunderbani during the night.
  • Jammu North: A driver, identified as Sham Lal, was swept away along with his vehicle by the fast-flowing stream near Ban Talab. His body was recovered later downstream.
  • Garkhal, Pargwal in Akhnoor: 47 villagers—mostly women, children, and elderly—stranded on rooftops amid flash floods were rescued by BSF using helicopters and prior boat attempts by SDRF and police. They were given food and shelter at a nearby BSF camp.

Widespread Flood Impact

Rivers like Chenab (8–9 ft above danger mark) and Tawi (near 16 ft danger level) were in full fury, leading to closures of key bridges and highways. Landslides blocked the Jammu–Srinagar NH, Mughal Road, and others, trapping hundreds of vehicles and disrupting essential supply chains.

Officials Respond

Joint operations by NDRF, SDRF, police, and district administration were launched for evacuations and preventing further damage to infrastructure, especially embankments near the Fourth Tawi Bridge. Engineers and Army teams were deployed to stabilize vulnerable zones.
