Delhi High Court tribunals upheld the Centre’s decision to ban AAC and JKIM under UAPA
New Delhi, Sept 19: Two Delhi High Court tribunals have upheld the Centre’s decision to ban the Awami Action Committee (AAC) headed by Kashmir’s influential cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and the Jammu and Kashmir Ittihadul Muslimeen (JKIM) led by Shia leader Masroor Abbas Ansari.

The tribunals, presided over by Justice Sachin Datta, noted that there was sufficient evidence to justify declaring the two organisations as “unlawful associations” under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), 1967.
“This Tribunal, having followed the procedure laid down in the UAPA and its Rules and having independently and objectively evaluated the evidence on record, is of the firm and considered view that there is sufficient cause for declaring the organisation as an unlawful association under Section 3(1) of the UAPA,” the orders stated.
On March 11, the Union Home Ministry imposed a ban on both groups, citing their involvement in activities deemed prejudicial to the integrity, sovereignty and security of India. The ministry alleged that leaders and members of AAC and JKIM were mobilising funds and supporting secessionist, separatist and terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir.
