Department Rules Out Extension
The e-filing portal witnessed heavy traffic with the September 15 deadline expiring at midnight. Despite widespread requests, the department clarified that there is no plan to extend the last date for individuals, HUFs, and entities not required to get their accounts audited for FY 2024–25 (AY 2025–26).
“More than 7 crore ITRs have been filed so far and still counting (15th September),” the department stated in a post on X, urging all pending taxpayers to file without delay. The last date to file without penalty remains September 15. For comparison, 7.28 crore ITRs were filed by the due date last year.
Netizens Flag Technical Issues
Several taxpayers and chartered accountants reported issues on social media, including difficulties in making tax payments, logging in, and downloading the Annual Information Statement (AIS). On September 14, the department termed “fake” a viral statement suggesting an extension, warning users to only rely on official updates.
Replying to complaints, the department said, “The e-filing portal is working fine. Please clear your browser cache or try accessing the portal through a different browser.” Taxpayers facing persistent issues were advised to share details with orm@cpc.incometax.gov.in.
Background and System Updates
The I-T department had earlier extended the deadline from July 31 to September 15 this year due to revisions in ITR forms and back-end utilities. These changes, notified in April–May 2025, required adjustments in filing systems.
Despite these challenges, ITR filings have shown consistent growth. For AY 2024–25, a record 7.28 crore returns were filed by July 31, 2024, compared to 6.77 crore the previous year, reflecting a 7.5% increase and widening compliance.
- Total ITRs Filed: Over 7 crore as of Sept 15, 2025.
- Deadline: No extension beyond Sept 15, 2025.
- Complaints: Glitches reported in login, tax payment, AIS download.
