Displeasure at Stakeholders’ Silence
Speaking at a closed-door meeting with travel agents at the newly inaugurated Gulmarg Convention Centre, Omar expressed disappointment that none of the industry representatives defended the Government when opposition parties criticised tourism policies. “I have taken several initiatives for tourism promotion, but during political scrutiny, I did not find the backing of stakeholders,” he said.
Govt’s Tourism Initiatives
The Chief Minister highlighted events such as the cycling festival in Pahalgam and other promotional campaigns, underlining his administration’s commitment to reviving tourism. The Gulmarg Convention Centre, described as state-of-the-art, has been launched to promote meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) activities and generate opportunities for local youth and businesses.
Paris Visit Controversy
Omar also referred to the criticism he faced over a scheduled visit to Paris, which travel agents had described as an important destination for international tourism promotion. He said he was disappointed that stakeholders remained silent when political opponents targeted him over the trip.
Need for Joint Effort
The Chief Minister stressed that the region’s economy has always relied heavily on tourism and allied trades. “The industry cannot regain its lost vibrancy unless both public and private stakeholders work hand-in-hand,” he noted, urging greater cooperation between Government and industry players.
