Indian Army’s first exclusive freight train on the Jammu-Baramulla line
Jammu, Sept 15: In a landmark move, Northern Railways has transported 753 metric tonnes of advance winter stocking (AWS) supplies for the Indian Army in Kashmir, utilizing the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL).
Historic Milestone for Army Logistics
For the first time, the Indian Army operated an exclusive freight train on the Jammu-Baramulla line. The train, running from BD Bari to Anantnag between September 12–13, represents a major breakthrough in logistics and civil-military cooperation, according to PRO Defence Jammu.
Until 2024, the Army relied on trucks to stock supplies in the Himalayan terrain, often facing significant logistical hurdles. The shift to rail transport ensures faster, safer, and more efficient winter preparedness.

Boost for Local Farmers and Communities
In a unique demonstration of dual-use logistics, the return journey of the freight train will be utilized to transport Kashmiri apples to markets across India. This initiative is expected to provide economic relief and livelihood security to farmers who previously faced losses due to road blockages caused by landslides and floods.
- Army Preparedness: Reliable winter stocking through rail transport.
- Farmers’ Gain: Seamless apple transportation beyond Kashmir.
- Civil-Military Fusion: Dual-use of infrastructure for national and local benefit.
