LG Sinha Highlights Nanotech Role in Flood Warning Systems and Sustainable Living

SRINAGAR, Sept 7: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha addressed the inaugural session of the five-day International Conference on “Nanotechnology for Better Living (NBL-2025)” at the University of Kashmir, organised jointly with IIT Hyderabad. Leading scientists and researchers are gathering to showcase advancements in sustainable nanotech applications.

Transformative Power of Nanoscience

In his keynote, the LG said: “Today evolution in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology is having transformative impact across various sectors. The cutting-edge research in future will address critical global challenges in industries, healthcare and the environment. There is not a single area of global socio-economic development that does not bear the signature of Nanotechnology in some form or the other.”

Nanotech for Disaster Warnings & Pollution Control

Sinha urged experts to form a group to develop an advanced early warning system for flash floods using sensitive nanotech-based sensors. He emphasized the need for soil sensors designed for the Himalayan region to detect changes in soil saturation and avert landslide disasters. Additionally, he called for nanomaterials to reduce pollution in chemical manufacturing. These innovations, he said, will be game-changers for disaster mitigation in the Himalayas.

Strengthening Defense & Academic Excellence

The LG encouraged the nanotech community to support India’s self-reliance in defense by crafting lighter components enabled by nanomaterials. He also called for plans to incentivize talent in nanotechnology within academic institutions.

Nanotech Serving Humanity

Highlighting the scope of nanotech, he said: “In the future, new innovations in nanoscale transistors, nanoparticles, nano materials and nanoscale additives in energy, environment, food, agriculture and electronics will be very important for the welfare of humanity. I hope that the benefits of these technologies will reach the common man.”

Abstract Book Released & Key Attendees

On the occasion, LG Sinha released the conference's abstract book. Notable attendees included Vice Chancellor Prof. Nilofer Khan; Dean Academics of BRIC-InStem, Prof. Praveen K. Vemula; IIT Kanpur’s Prof. Ashok Kumar; Prof. Rabia Hamid (Conference Organizing Chair, UoK), along with researchers, university officials, and top local administrators.
