Kathua’s Anekha Devi Selected for Indian Squad in Inaugural Women’s Blind T20 World Cup
Jammu, Sept 12: In a landmark achievement for Jammu and Kashmir and the entire North India, 20-year-old Anekha Devi from Machhedi (Bajohi), tehsil Lohi Malhar, Kathua, has been selected to represent India at the inaugural Women’s T20 Blind Cricket World Cup, scheduled from November 11 to 25.
A Journey of Determination
Anekha, an all-rounder, emerged from a rigorous nationwide selection that began with 56 players. She is the only player from North India in the 16-member Indian squad. Born with B2-level visual impairment, she overcame challenges with her family’s support and unwavering passion.
She completed her early schooling in Bajohi, later moving to Jammu and then Delhi for further education and cricket training. Currently, she is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts at Delhi University.
From Judo Champion to Cricket Star
Before cricket, Anekha excelled in Judo, representing J&K five times at the national level and winning gold on each occasion. Inspired by her uncle Ajay Kumar, General Secretary of the Cricket Association for the Blind J&K, she transitioned into cricket, eventually joining the Delhi Blind Women’s Cricket Team.
Voices of Support
Anekha expressed her excitement: “It’s a dream come true for me and my family. I want to inspire girls from J&K to take up blind cricket and form our own women’s team.”
Sports administrator Ranjeet Kalra praised her achievement, urging more support for blind cricket. Ajay Kumar highlighted that Anekha’s selection was possible due to consistent performance despite lack of government assistance. MLA Bani, Dr. Rameshwar Singh, also lauded her, promising financial and community support.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Anekha’s rise from a remote Kathua village to the Indian cricket squad highlights the power of perseverance and opportunity. As she prepares for the World Cup, she also represents hope for visually impaired girls across rural India to dream beyond limitations.
