India Pakistan UNHRC Geneva session

India counters Pakistan’s baseless allegations at the UNHRC in Geneva

GENEVA, Sept 24: India has strongly criticised Pakistan at the 60th session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), urging it to prioritise its collapsing economy and human rights record rather than harbouring terrorists and inflicting violence on its own people.

Kshitij Tyagi, Counsellor at India’s Permanent Mission in Geneva, delivered a sharp rebuttal after the Pakistani delegation made provocative statements targeting India. “A delegation that epitomises the antithesis of this approach continues to abuse this forum with baseless and provocative statements against India,” Tyagi said.

Referring to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), Tyagi reiterated India’s stance that Pakistan must vacate territories illegally under its occupation. “Instead of coveting our territory, they would do well to vacate the Indian territory under their illegal occupation,” he asserted.

The Indian envoy’s remarks came in the backdrop of a deadly explosion in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Tirah Valley earlier this week, where 24 people, including 10 civilians, were killed. Reports said the blast occurred at a Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) compound where explosives were stored. Local political leaders, however, alleged it was the result of aerial strikes — a claim denied by the administration.

Without directly naming the incident, Tyagi pointed to Pakistan’s misplaced priorities. “Focus on rescuing an economy on life support, a polity muzzled by military dominance, and a human rights record stained by persecution — perhaps once they find time away from exporting terrorism, harbouring UN-proscribed terrorists, and bombing their own people,” he said.

The remarks underscore India’s continuing stance at global forums — that Pakistan uses terrorism as a state policy while its own economy and governance remain in deep crisis. India has also consistently highlighted Pakistan’s role in sheltering proscribed terrorists on its soil.
