Essar Green Mobility is scaling up LNG and EV truck platforms to cut emissions from heavy-duty transport
NEW DELHI, Sept 24: Essar Green Mobility, part of the Essar Group, has set an ambitious target of achieving a USD 1 billion turnover (approx. ₹8,850 crore) within three years, as it expands its green trucking venture to decarbonise heavy-duty long-haul transport.
The company, which provides clean fuel logistics solutions, currently operates a growing fleet of commercial trucks powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and is preparing to launch electric trucks for short-haul operations. “Our aim is to build a 10,000-truck platform over the next three years,” said B. C. Tripathi, Board Member, in an interview with PTI.
Heavy-duty trucks, which transport steel, cement, iron ore and other bulk goods, account for nearly 40-45% of India’s crude oil consumption in the form of diesel. “Decarbonising this segment is vital for both industry and society, and unless addressed, the broader mobility transition will remain incomplete,” Tripathi added.
Essar Green Mobility is pursuing two pathways: replacing diesel with LNG for immediate emission reductions, and rolling out electric trucks for shorter operations. At present, around 700 LNG-powered trucks are already operational.
The ecosystem is being built end-to-end: trucks manufactured by Blue Energy Motors, operated by Greenline, and refuelled at LNG stations run by Ultra Gas & Energy. The company claims this model will cut logistics-related carbon emissions by 40%, reduce sulphur emissions to nearly zero, and lower nitrogen oxide emissions by 50%.
Essar has already invested about USD 140 million in its first phase, including truck manufacturing, fleet ownership, and fuelling stations. The next phase involves setting up a biofuel complex, expected to offer cost-effective solutions once completed.
Tripathi said the project aligns with India’s net-zero emission goals and will play a critical role in greening the logistics sector. “Our goal is to deliver end-to-end solutions that help industries decarbonise their supply chains,” he said.
