Address at Engineers’ Day

Speaking at the 58th Engineers’ Day function at SKICC Srinagar, organised to honour Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya, Abdullah highlighted that electricity generation and efficient distribution are the keys to J&K’s economic progress. “If we reduce our losses and improve billing, there will be no need for privatisation,” he said.

Hydropower as J&K’s Strength

The Chief Minister underscored the importance of harnessing J&K’s vast hydropower potential. “We should generate electricity and sell it to other regions, especially when their production is low. But to achieve this, we must first bring down losses in the power sector,” he added.

He acknowledged the challenges of hydropower, noting its high installation costs compared to renewable energy sources like solar, which is available at Rs 2–2.5 per unit. “Despite this, hydropower remains our only viable large-scale resource, and we must continue developing projects while improving efficiency,” Abdullah said.

Tariff Reforms and Efficiency

The CM emphasised the need for tariff rationalisation based on people’s capacity to pay, ensuring that the wealthy contribute more while the poor are protected. He also said he chose to retain the Power Department with himself as it is “the most important sector for J&K’s prosperity.”

Baglihar Project as a Milestone

Abdullah lauded landmark projects like the Baglihar hydroelectric project, which, despite challenges such as lack of counter guarantees, transformed the Union Territory’s power scenario. “I request you to maintain momentum in reducing losses and improving efficiency,” he urged officials and engineers.

  • Key Message: No privatisation; focus on reforms and efficiency.
  • Main Resource: Hydropower development remains J&K’s strength.
  • Challenge: Competing with cheaper renewable energy like solar.
  • Vision: Strengthening power sector to drive economic prosperity.
