Election Commission of India launches nationwide clean-up of inactive political outfits.
Jammu, Sept 19: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Friday de-listed 12 registered unrecognised political parties (RUPPs) from Jammu & Kashmir after finding them non-compliant with provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
The poll body said the action targets parties that have not contested any election for the past six years and have therefore lost their entitlement to remain on the ECI rolls. The move is part of a larger nationwide drive to weed out non-functional political outfits.

Nationwide Clean-up
In the second phase of the Commission’s clean-up operation, the ECI removed 474 RUPPs across the country on Friday, following an earlier round on August 9 when 334 parties were de-listed. With both rounds combined, 808 outfits have been struck off in two months.
The Commission noted that many parties either did not contest elections for six consecutive years or could not be physically traced at their registered addresses. Prior to the exercise there were 2,520 RUPPs; after the de-listing 2,046 remain alongside six recognised national parties and 67 state parties.
