SRINAGAR, Sept 24: Renowned earth scientist Prof. Harsh K. Gupta, former Member of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and ex-Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, called on Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah at the Public Outreach (Raabita) Office today. The meeting focused on earthquake resilience and disaster preparedness in the region.

The interaction was attended by Advisor to the CM, Nasir Aslam Wani, and Prof. Shakil Ahmad Romshoo, Vice-Chancellor of the Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST).

Prof. Gupta highlighted the urgent need for earthquake-safe infrastructure in Kashmir, which lies in a highly vulnerable seismic zone of the Himalayas. Citing the example of a successful medium-term earthquake forecast in the Northeast, he emphasized the importance of conducting similar studies in Kashmir.

Key suggestions included:

  • Observing an annual Earthquake Safety Day
  • Training school children on earthquake safety drills
  • Recreating scenarios of past major earthquakes for better planning
  • Conducting mega-mock drills across districts
  • Ensuring strict compliance with earthquake-safe construction codes
  • Deploying Earthquake Early Warning Systems along the Himalayan belt

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah appreciated Prof. Gupta’s recommendations and reiterated the government’s commitment to making Jammu and Kashmir’s infrastructure more disaster-resilient. He assured that these measures would be incorporated into the UT’s long-term public safety and preparedness strategy.
