CM Omar Abdullah chairs a review meeting on telecom and digital connectivity in J&K

SRINAGAR, Sept 16: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today chaired a high-level review meeting on strengthening telecom and digital communications infrastructure across Jammu and Kashmir, with focus on far-flung villages, dark zones and railway tunnels.

Meeting Highlights

The meeting was attended by Minister for Information Technology Satish Sharma, Advisor to CM Nasir Aslam Wani, Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, Additional Chief Secretary Dheeraj Gupta, several Administrative Secretaries and senior officials of BSNL.

Omar Abdullah underlined the importance of connectivity as a bridge to progress, saying robust mobile and internet services are vital for governance, education, healthcare, tourism and public welfare.

BharatNet Project Progress

BSNL officials briefed the CM on the Amended BharatNet Project (ABP) Phase-III, aimed at delivering high-speed internet to Gram Panchayats and rural areas. The CM directed strict adherence to timelines and priority coverage of uncovered habitations.

Issues and Bottlenecks

  • Early allotment of land for telecom towers and equipment.
  • Expeditious Right of Way (RoW) permissions from R&B, PMGSY, BRO, Forest Department for laying optical fibre cables.
  • Uninterrupted power supply to Gram Panchayats for BharatNet operations.
  • Centralized billing and smart metering systems for telecom infrastructure.
  • Ensuring functional Panchayat or alternate Government buildings for hosting digital services.

Government’s Commitment

Assuring full support, Omar Abdullah said: “Digital empowerment of our villages and towns is a cornerstone of inclusive growth. We are committed to ensuring that no part of Jammu and Kashmir remains disconnected—whether it is a remote hamlet, a dark zone, or a railway tunnel.”

The CM directed BSNL and concerned Government departments to work in close coordination, resolve bottlenecks quickly, and ensure timely delivery of projects across J&K.
