BEIJING, Sept 24: China on Wednesday dismissed US President Donald Trump’s accusation that Beijing and New Delhi are the “primary funders” of the Ukraine war through Russian oil purchases, stressing that the US and European Union also continue trade with Moscow.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun told reporters that Chinese-Russian commercial exchanges are in line with WTO rules and global market principles. He warned that Beijing will take countermeasures if its companies’ legitimate trade with Russia is obstructed.
“An overwhelming number of countries, including the US and EU, are engaging in trade with Russia,” Guo said, pointing out that Washington itself continues imports from Moscow. He added that China has consistently maintained an “objective and just position” on the Ukraine crisis, calling for peace talks.
In his address at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, Trump had accused China and India of funding the war by buying Russian oil. While he criticised the EU’s reliance on Russian energy, he avoided acknowledging US imports of Russian goods such as uranium, palladium, fertilisers, and chemicals.
The Trump administration has also slapped an additional 25% tariff on India for its Russian oil purchases, raising total levies on Indian imports to nearly 50% — among the highest in the world. India, however, has defended its position, noting that Western nations also maintain substantial trade with Russia despite sanctions.
According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), unlike its own energy-driven trade with Russia, US and EU imports include fertilisers, mining products, machinery, steel, chemicals, and uranium, highlighting what it calls Western double standards.
