Civil Secretariat Srinagar to host Cabinet meeting on Assembly session
JAMMU, Sept 22: The Union Territory Cabinet will convene in Srinagar tomorrow morning to finalize the date and sittings of the Assembly session before the six-month constitutional deadline of October 28. Sources indicate that the upcoming session will likely be brief, with 5–7 sittings, focusing on issues such as flood damages, PSA detention of AAP MLA Mehraj Malik, restoration of Statehood, and debates on job quotas.
Chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, the Cabinet meeting is scheduled for 10 AM at the Civil Secretariat Srinagar. The session will also review other departmental submissions, including House Rent Allowance (HRA) and ongoing flood relief and restoration work.
The Assembly Secretariat had recently reminded the Law Department of the October 28 deadline for convening the session, with legislators requiring at least one month’s notice to submit questions, private member’s bills, and resolutions.
Officials hinted that the session could be scheduled after October 20–23, following the Diwali and Bhaiya Dooj festivals. The Assembly Speaker will issue the calendar once the Cabinet recommends the dates to the Lieutenant Governor, who will formally convene the House.
Opposition parties are preparing to raise a wide range of issues, including damages from floods and landslides, the detention of Mehraj Malik, restoration of J&K’s Statehood, and concerns over reservation policies affecting general category representation in jobs and education.
Sources added that new bills may also be introduced, as only one bill was passed during the last budget session. A day each will be reserved for private member’s bills and resolutions, while starred and un-starred questions will be limited to five each per MLA.
