Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge in Patna

PATNA, Sept 24: Launching a sharp attack on the BJP, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday said that the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections will mark the beginning of the end of the Modi government’s “corrupt rule”.

Speaking at the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting in Patna, Kharge accused the BJP of “vote chori” (vote theft), communal polarisation, and undermining democracy. He said Bihar, the “mother of democracy,” will give a befitting response through its mandate.

Kharge also alleged that the Election Commission is raising questions of fairness, and voter lists are being tampered with across states. “Vote theft means theft of rations, pensions, scholarships, and rights of Dalits, tribals, backward classes, minorities, and the poor,” he said.

Highlighting unemployment and economic distress, the Congress chief said, “The promise of 2 crore jobs remains unfulfilled. Demonetisation and flawed GST derailed the economy. After eight years, reforms have only come under Congress pressure.”

Kharge claimed internal strife within the NDA is now visible, saying, “Nitish Kumar has been mentally retired by the BJP, which now considers him a burden.” He stressed that 80% of Bihar’s population belongs to OBC, EBC, and SC/ST categories, demanding transparency in caste census and reservation.

“The Congress, along with alliance partners, will deliver employment, education, health, social justice, and good governance. The 2025 Bihar polls will be a milestone not only for the state but for the country,” Kharge added.

The extended CWC meeting, the first ever in Bihar post-Independence, saw participation of top leaders including Rahul Gandhi, KC Venugopal, Jairam Ramesh, Sachin Pilot, Ajay Maken, and state Congress leaders. Ahead of the session, Kharge unfurled the party flag at the state headquarters.
