GUWAHATI, Sept 24: The Assam Government on Wednesday announced a ban on Syamkanu Mahanta, chief organiser of the North East Festival, from holding any function or event in the state, days after singer Zubeen Garg’s tragic death in Singapore.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said in a post on X that no financial grant, advertisement or sponsorship will be provided to any event linked with Mahanta or his organisations. The state will also request the Centre not to extend any assistance to him in any manner.
Garg passed away on September 19 while swimming in Singapore, where he had travelled to attend the 4th edition of the North East Festival, organised by Mahanta’s company. His death shocked fans across the Northeast.
The festival, sponsored by several Union ministries and supported by northeastern states, is one of the region’s most prominent cultural events. However, following the CM’s directive, Mahanta and his associates are now barred from hosting functions in Assam.
On Tuesday, Garg was given a tearful farewell with full state honours at Kamarkuchi on the outskirts of Guwahati. Thousands of fans joined in, singing his songs as his last rites were performed amid chanting of Vedic hymns.
