Flood destruction in Uttarakhand after heavy rains and cloudbursts

Floodwaters in Dehradun submerged roads, bridges, and buildings after cloudbursts and heavy rains

Dehradun, Sept 16: Cloudbursts and torrential rains overnight unleashed devastation across Uttarakhand, leaving 15 people dead, 16 missing, and more than 900 stranded, officials said on Tuesday. Swollen rivers swept away roads, houses, and bridges, with Dehradun district alone reporting 13 fatalities, while Nainital and Pithoragarh recorded one each.

Massive Rescue Operations

The Uttarakhand Disaster Management Authority said that 16 people remain missing, mostly in the state capital. Three others were injured and are under treatment. Despite inclement weather, rescue teams from NDRF, SDRF, and the fire department managed to save nearly 900 stranded individuals across multiple locations.

In Dehradun’s Paundha area, around 400–500 students trapped on the campus of Devbhoomi Institute were rescued by SDRF personnel. In another dramatic rescue, a boy clinging to an electric pole above raging floodwaters was saved by a rope operation, with rescuers risking their own lives.

Temples and Rivers Flooded

The Tons (Tamsa) River overflowed, inundating the Tapkeshwar Temple and partially submerging the iconic Hanuman statue near its entrance. “In the past 25–30 years, I have never seen the river rise this high,” said temple priest Bipin Joshi. Fortunately, only a handful of devotees were inside when floodwaters entered the shrine.

Roads and Infrastructure Damaged

Several key roads, including the Dehradun-Mussoorie route, were breached at multiple points, forcing authorities to advise tourists and residents to remain indoors until restoration work begins. In Sahastradhara, Maldevta, Santla Devi, and Dalanwala, severe flooding damaged homes, shops, and bridges. Sahastradhara alone recorded 192 mm of rainfall.

Waterlogging also affected Tehri, where people were stranded at Geeta Bhawan before being evacuated. In Nainital, landslides blocked roads and forced villagers from Majhara to seek shelter after their houses were buried under debris.

  • Fatalities: 15 dead, including 13 in Dehradun.
  • Missing: 16 people across the state.
  • Rescues: 900 people saved by NDRF, SDRF, and fire services.
  • Damage: Roads, bridges, houses, and temples destroyed or inundated.
  • Worst-hit Areas: Sahastradhara, Maldevta, Santla Devi, Dalanwala, Paundha.
