SRINAGAR, Sept 22: Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Anshul Garg on Monday said that 1.36 lakh metric tonnes of fresh fruit have been dispatched from the Valley in the last ten days, with vehicular movement on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway (NH-44) increasing to nearly 4,000 trucks per day.
He said that the Udhampur stretch restoration is being closely monitored by the Chief Secretary, while an SOP involving administration, traffic police, NHAI, and BRO teams ensures smooth transportation of fruit and essential supplies.
“In the last 10 days, 1.36 lakh MT of fruit has been dispatched via NH-44, the Mughal Road, and parcel train services. Under the SOP, 1,500–2,000 trucks leave the Valley daily, alternating between Srinagar–Jammu and Jammu–Srinagar traffic to ensure uninterrupted supply,” Garg explained.
He said that truck movement has now increased to 3,500–4,000 vehicles daily. Yesterday alone, 1,800 trucks passed through the Mughal Road, with fruit-laden vehicles given priority to prevent hardship for growers.
On parcel train services, Garg said 800–1,000 tonnes of fruit are being dispatched daily to Delhi, with new loading points opened at Baramulla and Anantnag to benefit growers in north and south Kashmir.
Addressing concerns over essential supplies, the Divisional Commissioner assured that sufficient stocks of petrol, diesel, and LPG are available for one week and are being replenished regularly. He urged people not to panic buy or believe rumours about shortages.
“The Chief Secretary is monitoring highway restoration daily, while the Chief Minister has directed coordinated efforts to ensure uninterrupted supplies and smooth fruit dispatch,” Garg added.
