Union Ministers to Visit All Flood-Affected Districts in J&K & Three Other States in Major Public Outreach

Jammu, Sept 12: In a major public outreach initiative, the Narendra Modi government has instructed Union Ministers to visit every district in four flood-affected UT/states—Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Uttarakhand—for two days to listen to grievances of those affected by floods, landslides and heavy rains. The outreach begins today, with Ministers scheduled to interact with local people and submit reports to the Centre.

Background & Scale of Damage

Sources say the decision came after Prime Minister Modi toured Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Uttarakhand. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh have already toured parts of Jammu & Kashmir. The Prime Minister is expected to visit Jammu & Kashmir soon, including aerial surveys of areas such as Katra and Chashoti in Kishtwar district.

Issues to Be Addressed

The Ministers of State will gather feedback from locals on problems arising from flash floods, cloudbursts, and landslides — including damage to roads, bridges, nalas, government infrastructure, public property, houses, fields and crops. Issues that fall under Union Ministries will be addressed directly; others will be referred to the concerned state or UT governments.

Previous Experience & Relief Packages

Since Jammu & Kashmir became a Union Territory in 2019, the Centre has sent Ministers multiple times to districts for outreach. In the wake of recent floods, Prime Minister Modi had already announced relief packages worth ₹1,600 crore for Punjab, ₹1,500 crore for Himachal Pradesh, and ₹1,200 crore for Uttarakhand. A package for Jammu & Kashmir is expected once damage assessment is completed.
